- Your questions about the island’s crêperies
Buckwheat galettes come from Brittany, but on Noirmoutier it’s the filling that makes all the difference: Noirmoutier potatoes, bouchot mussels, catch of the day. The restaurant guide from the island’s tourist office lists 11 crêperies on Noirmoutier, spread across the 4 communes. The team at our forest campsite in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez has picked 8 of them, at least one in each village, each with its own specialities, atmosphere and menu. Several of them also name their suppliers, from Maison Pineau to Moulin de Rairé. Take a look below.

A tip from the campsite team
From the campsite, a day out on Noirmoutier is best planned around the tides if you’re taking the Gois: check the crossing times the day before, and plan to come back by the bridge if the window is too short. In July and August, book your table the day before for the evening, as the town of Noirmoutier-en-l’Île fills up quickly from 19:30.
What’s the best way to end a day on the island? Sitting down in a Noirmoutier crêperie with a buckwheat galette. To plan the rest of your day, read our guide to visiting the island of Noirmoutier, ideal for a stay at our campsite near Noirmoutier.
Your questions about crêperies on Noirmoutier
How many crêperies are there on the island of Noirmoutier?
The restaurant guide published by the tourist office lists 11 crêperies on the island, spread across Noirmoutier-en-l’Île, L’Épine, La Guérinière and Barbâtre. Most of them are in the town of Noirmoutier-en-l’Île, mainly around the Grande Rue, the harbour and the château.
What local speciality can you find in the island’s galettes?
The menus put the spotlight on local island produce: Noirmoutier potatoes, locally farmed bouchot mussels and the fish of the day. Several places also use organic flour from the Moulin de Rairé. The Noirmouflette, a tartiflette made with the island’s potatoes, is a good example of this cooking.
Are the crêperies on Noirmoutier open all year round?
Only some of them. Several places in the town stay open all year, with one or more weekly closing days outside the high season. Others open from April to October, or from late March to mid-November, depending on tourist numbers. A quick phone call before you set off helps avoid disappointment in the low season.
Do you need to book a table at a crêperie on Noirmoutier?
Yes, booking is recommended in July and August, especially for evenings in the town of Noirmoutier-en-l’Île. Several restaurants take bookings by phone, text message or online through their website. Outside the high season, it’s less of a worry, but more places are closed on certain days.
How do you get to the island of Noirmoutier from the Vendée coast?
There are two road routes: the Noirmoutier bridge, open at all times from Fromentine, and the Passage du Gois, a tidal causeway that can only be crossed around low tide. Check the Passage du Gois crossing times before every crossing: the tide covers the causeway twice a day.
