It’s far more than a simple visit, it’s a real immersion in the history and flavours of cocoa. How did a simple bean become such a universal treat? Get ready to discover the secrets of chocolate making, surprising anecdotes and tastings that will awaken your senses. A great outing for families, chocolate lovers and anyone looking for something a little different in Vendée. Curious to find out more?

Chocolate has a story to tell… come and sink your teeth into it!

What if every square of chocolate told a story? This is the story of Maison Gelencser, based in the Vendée since 1956, whose “bean to bar” expertise led to the creation of the museum in 2014. Tucked away in La Roche-sur-Yon, this 300 m² space opens the door to six worlds where vintage machines and old tools whisper the tales of age-old craftsmanship.

From the moment you step inside, century-old presses, moulds worn smooth by time and yellowed archives guide you through the transformation of cocoa. How did these raw beans, once used as currency, become the emblem of a region? The answer lies in every room, each designed like a time capsule, with demonstrations of forgotten techniques and a tribute to the innovations that revolutionised the world of sweet treats.

The spirit of the Gelencser family lives on in the Musée du Chocolat en Vendée. Their stories, such as the arrival of the first roasting machines in the 1960s, show how chocolate went from being a simple product to a true art de vivre. The aroma of roasted cocoa, the textures under your fingertips, the samples handed out around a corner… Everything comes together to celebrate a heritage that is still very much alive.

Activities and workshops: chocolate is meant to be enjoyed hands-on!

What if chocolate became your partner in play? Here, you don’t just watch… you roll up your sleeves, and sometimes even get your fingers in the chocolate! Here’s how to turn your visit into a day to remember:

  • Children’s workshops (€10):  during the school holidays (except December), children aged 6 to 12 become real little chocolatiers. They make their own lollipop, from moulding to decorating, in a cheerful atmosphere full of laughter and treats. A fun introduction to the basics of the craft… and they go home with a sweet treat they’re proud to have made!
  • Special events (Mother’s Day, themed days…): the venue is transformed for the occasion, with live demonstrations by chocolatiers, surprise tastings of new creations and mini cocoa bean competitions. The idea? To share a friendly moment where visitors swap tips and stories with the experts.
  • Workshops for adults: these occasional sessions, led by skilled craftspeople, show you how to work with chocolate like a pro. Tempering, moulding, decorating… it’s a hands-on, delicious dive into the technique, where getting your fingers messy is part of the fun and well worth the result.
